Korean Language Activities to Do With Your Bilingual Baby (Age 0-1)

Are you hoping to raise your baby to speak Korean and English? Here are 5 language and literacy activities to do in both English and Korean to help your 0-1-year-old baby become bilingual.

Here are 5 activities I put together to help parents and caregivers pass on the Korean and English language to children. All of the activities can also be done with older children and are a great starting point for children who are new to either language. I have included necessary vocabulary, sentence examples, and tips to help you make the most of each activity.

Read Grocery Ads Together. 광고를 함께 읽어보세요.

Get some grocery store ads and look through them with your baby. Point out and name fruits, vegetables, and other food items.
마트 광고 몇가지를 아기와 함께 읽어보세요. 과일, 채소 및 기타 음식 항목을 가리키며 이름을 알려주세요.

Vocab: 어휘:

If you are unsure of the names of fruits, vegetables, or other items, check out a Korean food vocabulary list or search the names of the items in the Naver Dictionary. You can write the names on the ad to help you remember or read the food items’ names. You can introduce the name of the item and then name the category.

과일, 채소 또는 다른 항목의 이름이 확실하지 않다면 영어 음식 어휘 목록을 확인하거나 네이버 사전에서 항목의 이름을 검색해보세요. 광고지 위에 이름을 적는 것은 이름을 기억하거나 읽어내는 데 도움이 될 수 있습니다. 각 항목의 이름을 소개한 다음 카테고리로 분류할 수 도 있습니다.

Sentence Examples: 문장:

This is ______. 이거는 _____이에요/예요.

“This is an apple.” “이거는 사과예요.”

“It is a fruit.” “과일이에요.”

“This is spinach. It is a vegetable.” “이거는 시금치예요. 야채예요.”

Tips: 팁:

Look for both foods you eat often as well as foods that are unfamiliar. Knowing the names of foods you eat often will be helpful. This is also a great way to expand your and your child’s vocabulary of foods with which you are not familiar.

자주 먹는 음식과 낯선 음식을 모두 찾아보세요. 자주 먹는 음식의 이름을 알아두는 것이 도움이 될 것입니다. 이는 낯선 음식에 대한 부모와 아이의 어휘를 확장하는 좋은 방법이기도 합니다.

2. Insert Your Child’s Name into Books and Songs. 아이의 이름을 책과 노래에 삽입해보세요.

Picture created through Canva

While reading books or singing songs, insert your child’s name where appropriate. Encourage your child to point at pictures and to turn the pages when reading.

책을 읽거나 노래를 부를 때, 아이의 이름을 적절한 곳에 넣어서 해보세요. 아이에게 그림을 가리키도록 하고 읽을 때 페이지를 넘기도록 부탁해보세요.

Vocab: 어휘:

Book 책

To read 읽다

Page 페이지

To turn a page 페이지를 넘기다

To point 가리키다

Here 여기

Sentences: 문장:

“Do you want to read a book?” “책을 읽고 싶니?”

“Look, this is a book about Lucas (insert child’s name)!” 이거 봐봐, 루카스에 대한 책이네!

“Try pointing here.” 여기를 가리켜봐”

“Point at the ____” ____를/을 가리켜봐”

“Point at the picture.” “그림(/사진)을 가리켜봐”

“Turn the Page” “페이지를 넘겨봐.”

Tips: 팁:

Look for books and songs with a main character. If you struggle to know the difference between regular Korean words and Korean names, identify clues to be able to identify the names of characters in a book. Then switch in your child’s name for the character’s name.
주인공이 있는 책과 노래를 찾아보세요. 책에서 이름을 구별할 수 없을 때에는, 책에서 캐릭터의 이름을 구별할 수 있는 단서를 찾아보세요. 그런 다음 아이의 이름을 캐릭터의 이름에 넣어보세요.

3. Provide Your Child With Access to Books at all Times. 언제나 아이에게 책에 접근할 수 있도록 해주세요.

Provide a cozy book nook for your child. Make sure the books are low and within your child’s reach. Let your child look through books of their choosing and watch how they use them. Refrain from correcting them or telling them how to use the books correctly. Let them explore the books in their own way.

아이를 위한 아늑한 책 공간을 마련하세요. 책은 아이가 손에 쉽게 닿을 수 있도록 낮게 놓아두세요. 아이가 원하는 책을 골라 살펴보게 하고, 아이들이 책을 어떻게 사용하는지 지켜보세요. 책을 올바르게 사용하는 방법을 알려주거나 잘못된 행동을 고치려고 하지 마세요. 아이가 자유롭게 책을 탐험하도록 해주세요.

Vocab: 어휘:

Book 책

Book shelf 책장

Book Nook 책코너

To read 읽다

Sentences: 문장:

“I (Mommy) made you a book nook!” “엄마가 너를 위해 독서공간을 만들었어!”

“Your books are on the bookshelf.” “네 책들은 책장에 있어.”

Tips: 팁:

Using a rotating book system will help you expose your child to a plethora of books without overwhelming them or creating a big mess. You can choose a small number of books to have available to your child and rotate them weekly. Include Korean and English books to add variety to the content you expose your child to. At this age, focus on books with lots of images and books that are toddler-safe and won’t be easily destroyed, such as board books. You can borrow from your library or buy used books to save money.

4. Play a Body Part Bubble Game. 신체 부분 버블 게임 해보세요

Blow bubbles and encourage your baby to reach for them. Aim the bubbles at your baby’s feet, hands, tummy, etc. and say, “There is a bubble on your tummy!” “You touched a bubble with your foot!” or other phrases that will help your baby learn the names of their body parts.

비눗방울을 불고 아기가 비눗방울에 손을 뻗어 잡을 수 있도록 해보세요. 방울을 아기의 발, 손, 배 등에 가게하고 “네 배에 방울이 있어!” “네 발로 방울을 만졌어!”와 같은 표현들을 사용하여 아기가 자신의 신체 부분의 이름을 배울 수 있도록 도와주세요.
