Making a Korean Passport for Our Child

Our daughter was born in America, but her father is Korean. So we decided to make her a passport in Korea.

In order to make a passport for your child in Korea, you need to have:

  1. Passport photo (25,000 won for 10 photos at the photo studio (사진관). Make sure the ears are showing.)

2. Certificate of Family Relations (가족관계증명서) (Pick it up at the district office구청)

3. Identification (신분증) – passport (여권) or Resident Registration Card (주민등록증)

4. Around 42,000 won

Make sure you registered your child’s birth (출생신고) so they have a Resident Registration Number (주민등록번호).

Go to your local District Office (구청) and fill out the Passport Application Form (여권발급신청서). You will need one proper passport photo to put on the document.

여권신청 apply for a passport:

  1. Fill out the application and show the application to the number ticket desk.
  2. Receive a number ticket (queue) and wait for the number to appear on the screen.
  3. Give the person at the window your application and photo

If your child is under 18, a parent with a Resident Registration Number (주민등록번호) will need to fill out the Representative Application Form (대리인신청서). Make sure they have the resident registration number (주민등록번호). Only the person who filled out this form can receive the passport once it is ready. It takes 3-5 business days for the passport to be ready. You can choose to receive the passport by mail or pick it up at the district office (구청). If the parent is unable to pick up the passport, they can fill out the Passport Proxy Pickup Authorization Form (여권 대리수령 위임장) so that someone else with a resident registration number (주민등록번호) can.
