Hello! Today, I’m excited to share one of our favorite children’s books on Korean culture written in English that is readily available at local libraries or online. My daughter and I have truly enjoyed this book, and I think you might love it too!
When it comes to children’s books, I’m always drawn to those with beautiful illustrations and stories that can draw my daughter into the story. This book is definitely one of those! As the oldest granddaughter on my side of the family, my daughter can totally relate to the main character, Sohee who is the Eonni (언니) in the family. And as the book is based around Ddeokguk (떡국), it is easy to turn this book into an interactive activity just by eating the dish together.

The book is called “Wish Soup” by Korean American Junghwa Park. This charming story centers around Seollal (설날) and Ddeokguk (떡국). My daughter adored the silly and heartwarming narrative so much that she asked me to read it to her every day for a week! The story even sparked her curiosity about Ddeokguk (떡국), leading us to enjoy this traditional dish every weekend for several weeks. Even though she had eaten Ddeokguk before, it was a good way to respark her interest in the dish! It’s a delightful way to introduce your child to Seollal (설날) and the significance of Ddeokguk (떡국) in Korean culture.
